"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Natures' peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop of like autumn leaves."
~John Muir
Out of all the book adventures my family has done, this is the book we have jumped into the most. Not only is it one of the most frequented jumps, but it holds a place in my heart because it is the first book jump for my little family. It is the book that has connected several generations of my family.
Growing up in the Cascade Mountains, just East of Portland, Oregon, Heidi and her story became my friend. It was so easy to envision being her. All I had to do was braid my hair, wrap them around my head, put on the dirndl dress my mom had sewn with hiking boots of course, pack a picnic lunch of bread and cheese, and finally convince someone in my family that we really needed to go to the mountains to spend the day hiking, fishing on the lake, or just stopping for a quick lunch to take in the views. "Let's have a Heidi day", I would say.
Shortly after my mother passed away, my girls wanted to do something to remember her by. "Let's watch grandma's favorite movie." I said. After watching Heidi starring Shirley Temple, my girls started asking many questions. Is Heidi real? Can we meet her? Where can we find her.? It was then that I realized that my 8 and 5 year old didn't know Heidi was a book and that she lived on our book shelf. I could think of no better way to remember my mom than to have a "Heidi Day". This time, however, we invited our girlfriends, who just happened to be mothers and daughters. This was the very first book we jumped into as a book-club.
